Description: Formal studio portrait of Solomon H. Smith (1809-1874), who came to Oregon in 1832 with Wyeth party. Married one of Chief Coboway's daughters. Hew was the first school teacher of Oregon, voted with American Party at Champoeg on May 2, 1842, built the first white pioneer cabin on Clatsop Plains, and was a farmer, store keeper, school cleerk, county commissioner and state senator.
