Keeping the Past Alive
Did You Know?

Did you know that sand wasn’t always abundant on Seaside’s beach? A hundred years ago, teams of horses pulled large drag scoops full of sand to the rocky beach-front near the present turnaround, to accommodate each summer’s crowd of sunbathers.

Did you know that in the year 1905 Seaside had a total population of 851 souls? By 1930, the population had grown to 1525. The 1990 census records 5580 full-time residents with as many as 28,000 visitors during the summer months.

Did you know that between 25 and 30 thousand people attended the dedication of Seaside’s unique Promenade on August 7, 1921? It was designed by City Engineer L.C. Rogers and built by contractor J.H. Tillman at a total cost of under $200,000. The fact that it has remained stable after 70 years is a grand tribute to the expertise of these two men.
